Genre: Sludge Metal, Grindcore, Crust Punk
FFO: Converge, Tragedy, Dead in the Dirt
Featuring members of Sumac and Baptists, it’s no surprise this project’s new, Kurt Ballou-produced LP is a filthy, bludgeon to the face. The riffs sonically resemble slabs of concrete and the vocal performance is delivered in the most disgustingly evil way you could image.
If you are a fan of any of the recommended artists here and happen to searching for some sludgey, crusty, raw metallic hardcore, be sure to stream Maximum Suffering below.
Rezn–Calm Black Water
Genre: Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, Psychedelic Rock
FFO: Electric Wizard, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Monolord
Chicago-based stoner metal quartet, Rezn, follow up 2017’s Let it Burn with a sophomore effort illustrating a maturation in the group’s songwriting abilities.
Rezn implements a jam-oriented sound with sprawling tracks seemingly influenced by nostalgic, groove-based psych rock with just enough fuzz in their tone to appeal to modern audiences as well.
Calm Black Water is a fun, trippy, yet crushing listen. Be sure to stream below.
Un–Sentiment
Genre: Funeral Doom, Death Metal, Post Metal
FFO: Pallbearer, Yob, Primitive Man
Seattle’s Un offer a textured, dense, sophomore record that packs a serious punch despite only boasting four tracks. Such is not uncommon for the funeral doom genre as each available tune hear dances near the fifteen minute mark. Each dirge dabbles in sorrow-filled emotion, melody, beauty, and horrifying brutality that certainly makes Un a name to watch out for in the current doom movement.
